Providing access to The Mall, Admiralty Arch is one of London's grandest office buildings. Completed in 1912, it was commissioned by Edward VII in memory of his mother Queen Victoria, Britain's longest reigning monarch.
Today, this imposing Grade 1 listed building which is next to the Old Admiralty Building, is home to the Cabinet Office and the rather sinister sounding Prime Minister's Strategy Unit and Social Exclusion Task Force.
It also plays host to a rather peculiar feature which, if you look closely, can be found on the northernmost arch. Known as the "nose", it is a small protrusion unsurprisingly in the shape, and size, of a human nose. No one is really sure of its purpose especially as it is seven feet up in the air! Tradition holds, however, that the nose is a tribute to the Duke of Wellington, who apart from winning the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, also had a very big nose. Apparently, royal soldiers passing through the Arch would give the nose a rub as they went about their duties.
