Benjamin Franklin House

Benjamin Franklin House is an innovative museum which opened in 2006. It is the only remaining home of Benjamin Franklin, one of the United States' Founding Fathers. The house was built in 1730 and was the home of Franklin for 16 years.

The Museum House is at 36 Craven Street, and a surprising number of original features remain including the fireplaces, ceilings and floorboards.

The Museum offers visitors a "Historical Experience" - actors bring the house to life during the time of Benjamin Franklin's residence. Polly Hewson was the daughter of Franklin's landlady, and was considered a second daughter to Franklin. The life and times of the house are portrayed through her experiences, along with sound, lighting and special effects. In the 'Student Science Centre' experiments are re-created focussing on the primitive medical research done by William Hewson who was an 18th century surgeon and married to Polly. A Discovery room lays out the historical artefacts and a Demonstration room is where Franklin's experiments are now replicated. At the top of the house is a Scholarship Centre with a study of the many subjects which Franklin had an interest in.
